This week, we're going freestyle as we start with one basic topic: overpopulation. From there, the conversation weaves into pop culture history, the modern American education system and finally, the drug war. As usual, what starts off very minimally ballons out all over the place. Enjoy!

Opening Music: "Alive WIP v2" by George Carpenter
Closing Music: "Born Under A Bad Sign" performed by The Great Oglee Moglee Blues Band

Teaching kids just to pass tests is just dumb, they need to understand and be able to apply what they are taught. As a great man once said “Verbatim regurgitation is against my principles”. Children should be taught to think for themselves. Not just regurgitate facts.

I can’t remember where I heard this, but it is interesting to contemplate. What would it matter if we used up all the oil and coal, no other species uses it for anything. We’re the only ones that rely on it, and if we’re stupid enough to use it all up before we come up with a replacement, we deserve to become extinct, or feudal again, either is likely.

I thought your discussion of why you entered WW2 very interesting. In OZ we’re taught about the embargo that was placed on Japan by the US, to get them to stop the invasion of China. All Oil and Raw materials were stopped. Doing this to a nation who thought of there leader as a god, and thus infallible, was never going to end well. I’m sure I’ve simplified this, but Japan didn’t attack for no reason. They felt cornered, to retreat would be to lose face. So they decided to take what wouldn’t be sold to them.

Drugs are a very contentious issue, I don’t get a lot of respect for my views among my friends. I’ve never smoked, never drank alcohol, never done drugs of any kind, except for the occasional doctor prescribed ones. In fact I don‘t even drink coffee. I can’t stand the taste of alcohol, or the smell of cigarettes, and as most of the illegal drugs seem to lead on from them, well, it just never happened.
I’ve seen alcoholism up close, it destroys families, and friendships. I’ve also seen family members die from cancer. But if people want to abuse drugs, as long as they’re no hurting anyone else, let them.

Everybody has their vices though, I have a very sweet tooth, which makes my dentist happy.......

And occasionally I drive really fast, I mean really fast. I’ve hit 100mph on the way to work a couple of times.

The day after I listened to this Podcast I was watching a doco by Michael Palin, called \"The last day of World War 1\". It had the footage of Hitler accepting the surrender of France that you mentioned, and it explains the reason he looked so smug. That was the exact train carriage in which the Germans were forced to surrender in WW1.
As a side note, over 600 American soldiers died on the last day, after the surrender had been signed. General Pershing wanted to push all the way to Berlin. He believed if Germany wasn\'t smashed into submission, they wouldn\'t believe they had been defeated, and they would have to return to finish the job in years to come. Prophetic!

A quick aside to your aside Big Dave (OZ), that railway carriage was destroyed after that French surrender. The logic? So the Germans could never again surrender in it. ;o)

Lando, have you ever thought about being a teacher?
Lots of vacation time to work on your writing.

A truly honourable profession.
